MLK DAY OF SERVICE

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a defining moment each year when Americans across the country step up to make our communities more equitable and take action to create the Beloved Community of Dr. King’s dream. While Dr. King believed the Beloved Community was possible, he acknowledged and fought for systemic change. His example is our call to action.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. AmeriCorps has been charged with leading this effort for the past quarter century.

Making time to volunteer for MLK Day of Service is a great way to engage with your community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King. Whether you plan on cleaning up a public space, mentoring a young person, or assisting those who are food insecure, what you do makes a world of difference.

VOLUNTEER DUBUQUE

Volunteer Opportunities in the Dubuque Area Tri-States.  Get involved, make a difference!

Volunteer DBQ was developed to advance Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the volunteerism sector. Dubuque is a diverse community with significant untapped potential when it comes to intercultural volunteerism. Our priority is to engage prospective volunteers, identify their interests and connect them to our community organizations by matching the volunteers’ skills, interests and abilities.

Why is volunteering important? After nearly 2 years of being disconnected from each other, volunteering is a great way to reconnect with your community and make new friends. Volunteering has direct benefits to your mental and physical health, and can help improve your mood. Additionally, volunteering can help advance your career through community connections and expanding your interests and skills! Volunteering is a fun and easy way to explore your interests and reconnect to what matters most!

Are you interested in making our community better through volunteering?  Please contact Sarah Berna, AmeriCorps Coordinator with the City of Dubuque, at 563-580-6942 or sberna@cityofdubuque.org .  Paula Paider Licht, Director of Community Building and Impact with United Way at (563) 588-1415 or paula.paiderlicht@dbqunitedway.org .
