Dr. John Stewart

John Stewart moved to Dubuque from Seattle in 2001 and became involved in the MFC in 2013.  He had "mostly retired" from his position as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Dubuque, and had learned from UD's students, faculty, and staff of color how much there was to do in Dubuque to help make it a welcoming and inclusive community.  John has been a communication professor and executive trainer for almost 40 years. His primary focus has been on interpersonal communication, and his most recent book is Personal Communicating and Racial Equity (2016).  He has three children, his wife, Becky has one, and together they share five grandchildren and a precious great-granddaughter.  John and Becky spend several weeks each summer at their cabin in the San Juan islands in Washington State, enjoying beachcombing, campfires, and quiet time with family. He also enjoys snow- and water-skiing, bicycling, reading, and writing.
